Exploiting whole-genome approaches. Candidate gene-based studies have been the focus of human genetic association studies for the past several years. As the knowledge of genetic variation has emerged and the genotyping technologies to investigate such variation have matured, our ability to carry out whole-genome association studies appears poised to address fundamental issues, such as the association with complex diseases and drug responses.
