Geographical coverage of hierarchical genetic subgroups detected in Sub-Saharan Africa. (a) K = 3 was found as the best representation of substructure at this level in the hierarchy. Clusters were specific to geography and population, such that the San and Mbuti formed distinct clusters, excluding individuals from all other populations. (b) The next level in the hierarchy allowed cluster S1A-1 to be subdivided into K = 2 genetic groups, where the majority of Mandenka form an exclusive genetic grouping from the remaining population representatives.
